The CNA course is designed to train health care assistants in basic skills necessary to assist nurses in a variety of health care settings and to be efficient health care team members. Kansas Department of Health and Environment Certified Nurse Aide Curriculum Guidelines are followed. Upon completion of the course students will be eligible to take the state CNA Examination. The CNA program is a partnership between NCKTC and the facility. The institution would host the skills lab and clinical portions, while NCKTC-Hays teaches the online portion of the course. Clinical Supervisors from your facility are contracted and compensated through NCKTC to provide the practical experience. The CNA consists of 45 hours of independent online work. The skills/clinical instructor then completes the required minimum of 20 hours (can be more if needed) of skills instruction, demonstration, and evaluation before the students are allowed to go to clinical. The skills/clinical instructor then takes the students through the required minimum of 25 clinical hours.
Items to be considered include:
1) Facilities must have 1 or more RN’s that are certified through KDHE to teach CNA and CMA courses. (NCKTC can guide you on how to do this if you currently do not have a certified instructor on staff.) Instructors are not allowed to engage in any work related to their facility while they are with students. They are at that time employees of NCKTC and must be fully dedicated to the attention of the students. For CNA courses the instructor will have no more than 10 students, and for CMA courses the clinical instructor would have no more than 6 students.
2) CNA and CMA students are not permitted to give direct resident care until they have completed skills checklists that demonstrate competency. Facilities must have an adequate area available for skills lab and check-offs. (Examples of areas that can be used for skills lab and check offs includes an empty resident room or hospital room with bed, conference rooms, etc . . .)
3) The facility must also have availability of supplies and equipment so that students are able to complete hands on skills lab and check-off experiences prior to clinicals with the residents.
4) Any facility that has a NATCEP Training Ban in place will need a waiver completed each time they want to host clinicals for a CNA course. (This training ban is a result of surveys that garner significant or high level deficiencies. This is something that NCKTC would work directly with you to make sure is completed prior to the start of the course, as it MUST be completed at least 4 weeks in advance of the start of the course.) 5) State guidelines for course delivery are specific, and skills lab / clinical schedules must be adhered to. Any change in the schedules must be coordinated with myself and submitted to KDHE. 6) Skills/Clinical sites must be aware that the coordinator from the sponsoring organization (NCKTC-Hays) will make visits to the clinical site to ensure that the course is progressing as indicated and that regulations are being followed. It is also possible that representatives from KDHE may visit clinical sites.
